"So this is it?" Lenore Black panted as she checked the slip of paper with her new address on it. The building in front of her was tall, her newly purchased home was a semi-detached house and she loved it!
She felt excitement rush through her blood. This after all, was Lenore's first own house. Leaving her old town Moonlight Falls was a tough 3 day long journey, her poor excuse of a car broke down every now and then. Today is a new day for her, Hidden Springs was as described. Quaint, friendly and Lenore hoped, .. mysterious.
Lenore's dream of becoming a professional writer could not have come true if she stayed back in her home town, she needed a fresh setting. New inspiration and unfamiliar faces. She smiled from ear to ear shuffling through her jeans pockets for her keys.
With a push the heavy door to her house opened. The inside was bare and wore down, visual symptoms of a house that once had many residents. The yellow stained walls begged for a splash of paint and the hard stone floors needed some covering.
Lenore inspected her new abode, her steps replaced by light skips. Despite the emptiness, the cold and old appeal of the house she couldn't wait to start her life. Her whole life investments and money inheritance went into this.
"I can make this work!" Joy overtook her body and mind and she hopped up and down. The truck with her furniture is scheduled to come the next day, in the afternoon. Her night would require sleeping on a pile of blankets and pillows on the floor but that didn't matter.
Lenore finally had her house and she was pleased! First experience of real pleasure since the accident a year back!
---
Through the window of house number 2, Daniel Kurt witnessed the most prettiest girl that has landed in his sights. Her long dark purple hair was covered with a yellow beret, matching her attire. A jumper over shirt and short jeans exposing her long smooth legs.
A jumper and shorts? He laughed at the way girls dressed these days. It made no sense but this girl could pull it off. She'd even look beautiful in a plastic trash bag. His gaze broke from the window when she skipped inside.
"How can anyone be excited about moving into a house like this?" He thought out loud, scratching his chin. Despite how weird the girl seemed, Daniel's body tingled all over. She looked heavenly, like a kooky goddess sent from above.
Such a pretty thing probably has a boyfriend and heaps of admirers. He sulked. But dashing downstairs gave him another point of view.
It's no harm to meet the girl and talk!
---
The doorbell rang. Who could it be? Lenore thought. She rushed to the door and had to pull extra hard as it got stuck. Creaks suggested that the door required oiling.
At the door stood a handsome, dark skinned man. Lenore instantly flashed her pearls at him.
"Hi!" His smile was welcoming, warm and genuine. Extending his hand he added. "I'm Daniel Kurt, your next door neighbour."
"Oh come in!" Lenore squealed and ushered him into the house. "I'm just unpacking what I brought with me, so I apologize for the mess, I have boxes we can sit on, and I can make coffee."
Daniel sat down on the red box and looked around. He'd been in this house a long time back when the young family had lived here. They moved and apparently left the house in an appalling state.
"Sorry, I um. Wasn't expecting any guests so sudden." Her heart sped as she turned her precious coffee machine on and prepared two cups. On the way she stumbled over scattered boxes, and blushed. Daniel thought she looked incredibly darling.
"How are you liking your new house?" He asked, fiddling with his fingers.
"So far so good. Just got to wait for my furniture delivery, tomorrow noon. Soon I can start calling this a home! Oh, By the way, my name is Lenore Black I think I didn't mention my name."
"Lenore? Such a pretty name!" Daniel exclaimed as he received his mug of coffee.
"Really? I would rather be called anything else but Lenore. Do you know how annoying it is when people call me Lenny? I think Pixie would be a nice name!"
"Pixie?" Daniel giggled and eyed her.
"Did you never want to change your name before?" She mused.
"I don't recall wanting to, when my mother told me she wanted to name me Dick Junior I started to appreciate the name Daniel."
They both laughed, and a silence followed.
Lenore looked deeply into his grey spectacled eyes. She's never seen anyone with grey eyes before, she always imagined them to be colourless, dull but his grey eyes were beautiful! They looked like the sea after a storm.
What was it that she was feeling? It felt familiar! Felt like love! But in her thirty years of life she had only loved one person and he crushed her! Maybe this wasn't love, but a warning? Lenore didn't seem to know! Only one thing was certain, her eyes were glued to him. His smooth, dark complexion was desirable but a pretty boy like himself probably had a girlfriend! That last thought left Lenore distraught.
"Do you know if there's any low wage jobs around here?" She blurted out, obviously she needed money for bills and she hadn't sold any books yet. A low wage job that didn't require advanced education would be good enough for the time being.
"I know a lady, Miss Jones, she's looking for a babysitter. For her three year old daughter? She practically lives next to us."
"Really?" Lenore exclaimed. Babysitting? Why not! After all, she practically raised her two siblings. What harm could watching television with a three year old be?
"The house is the one with the yellow car. Apparently she can't find a decent sitter and is willing to pay a reasonable amount for one."
Daniel felt a vibration in his pocket. His phone was ringing. Lenore found it cute how he whispered his apology and answered the receiver.
"Hey Lisa. No. Okay, yeah I'll be there. Okay. Yep. Bye." After a long series of goodbyes, Daniel shut his phone off.
"Sorry, I have to get going. There's an open party at the park tomorrow at 6pm. If you're not busy renovating maybe I'll see you there!" He smiled and shook her hand goodbye.
Lenore walked him out, slightly disappointed that it was probably his girlfriend calling. She waved as he ran across the yard and jumped into his house.
The house with the yellow car had the lights on despite it inly being 5pm. Quickly gathering anything that may be needed as proof that she could be a good babysitter, she left the house locked the door and made her way across the patch of grass between them.
Miss Jones' house was enclosed with a hedge, serving no purpose really, it was low enough for a dog to jump over it. She pictured the woman in her head, but the concepts changed as quick as slides on a slideshow.
Lenore knocked on the door, fearing that she could possibly wake up the three year old girl.
In no time Miss Jones opened the door. She was a plump woman, with a cosmetic dump on her face, but she greeted Lenore nicely.
"How can I help you dear?"
"I'm wondering if you're still looking for a babysitter?"
"Oh come on in dear! I am in desperate need of one."
She entered the sweet smelling home.
Lenore was led to a sitting room. It was so clean it was hard to believe a kid would live here! Miss Jones had shuffled trough her drawers and picked up a pen and paper.
"So, what's your name Sweetie?"
Lenore gave the woman all her details, name, age, previous occupations. She even had to show her driving license! Just in case, she also showed her a photo of herself and her siblings.
Momma bear needed all sorts of reassurance.
"I am the eldest and I took care of them." Lenore smiled.
"Your parents must have had great trust in you!" Miss Jones sounded pleased.
"Okay, you got the job!" Miss Jones announced. "You can start in half an hour. My work schedule is constantly changing, so I will keep you updated by text. Come up I'll show you my kids."
Kids? Lenore thought. As in more than one child?
Upstairs, there was a nursery. Sara, the three year old girl cuddled up to her teddies. She was sleeping heavily and her cheeks were rosy red.
"She's adorable!" Lenore cooed.
"WALTER?" Miss Jones snapped in a half whisper.
Who is Walter?
A teenage boy strolled down the spiral staircase. He didn't look like his mother, or maybe the make up was covering the mother's features. Nevertheless, he was handsome, but reminded Lenore of a lost puppy. Wait, why wasn't he minding his sister? He looks old enough.
"This is Lenore, Sara's babysitter. Show her around the house and behave."
He reluctantly received a kiss on the forehead, and a ruffle through his hair. Miss Jones left soundly. The Click-Clack oh her High heels could be heard from outside.
Walter huh? Lenore wondered.
---
One thing was certain. The Jones household had an amazing television. After 10pm, Sara had been cleaned, fed, and put to bed. Lenore killed the time with tv shows. Walter moused his way downstairs, shy to approach Lenore. She found it strange, most teenagers she knew loved talking to adults.
"You going to join me?" She asked smiling. Walter nodded, and puffed air out. Lenore was glad she could put him at some sort of ease.
"So Walt? What age are you?" Advertisements popped up on the television. They had time to converse.
"15." He mumbled.
"Really? I remember when I was fifteen, well mostly how tough school got."
"It's not that hard for me. Rather be working than.." He trailed off.
Touchy subject. Okay.
"I didn't like staying at home. My parents fought so I felt, safer in school I guess." She tried to relate to him.
"My mom, she's bossy. Hires a new babysitter every week or so because she doesn't trust me. Anyhow, wonder how long you will last."
"I'll stay as long as I can please your mother kid. You're not getting rid of me that easily!" She chuckled.
"So, on the topic of school, do you have a girlfriend?"
"Why does everyone assume I need a girlfriend." His brown eyes pierced hers.
"You're handsome, kind you must have an admirer at least!"
"You think I'm handsome?" His eyes lit up.
"Well are you not? Look in the mirror more often kid!"
"But still I don't want a girlfriend."
"Why not?"
"I.. I just don't!"
"Do you want a pizza then? I can order one."
"Sure why not!"
Finally! He opened up! Lenore quietly celebrated her victory but something on the tv took her attention.
"Dean and Castiel are so about to snog!" But she was proved wrong. "Darn it!" She pouted.
She's weird, Walter thought. But he liked her! He liked his sister's purple haired babysitter!
End of chapter!
Chapter 2 upcoming soon! :)
